What is n8n?
n8n is an open-source workflow automation tool. You connect your apps and build multi-step automations, a trigger starts the flow and each node does something (fetch data, transform it, call an API, run code, send a message). It is like Zapier or Make, but more flexible, cheaper at volume, and it can be self-hosted so you own your data.
Is n8n free?
Yes and no. n8n is open-source and free to self-host, you only pay for the server it runs on. n8n also offers a paid cloud version if you would rather not host it yourself, priced by executions and features. For agencies at volume, self-hosting is usually the cheapest path.
Is n8n hard to learn?
It is more involved than Zapier to start, because it is more powerful. The visual canvas is approachable, but getting real value at volume takes setup and maintenance, which is why many agencies have it built and run for them rather than doing it in-house.
What can you automate with n8n?
Almost any repetitive, multi-app process: client onboarding, reporting, lead capture and qualification, follow-ups, data sync between tools, content workflows, and AI steps like drafting or classifying. If it involves moving data between apps or running a routine on a schedule, n8n can do it.
n8n vs Zapier, which is better?
For a few simple no-code zaps, Zapier is easier to start. For an agency automating client work at volume, n8n wins on cost, flexibility, and data ownership, and it can be self-hosted and white-labeled. Most agencies that outgrow Zapier move to n8n.
Can you self-host n8n?
Yes, that is one of its main advantages. You run it on your own server (Docker makes this straightforward), which keeps client data on your infrastructure and removes per-task pricing. AOC sets up and maintains self-hosted n8n for agencies.
